Manufacturers set for digital boost
A North East manufacturing support programme is helping smaller firms improve efficiency and keep pace with growing demand by adopting digital tools and technology.
Made Smarter Adoption North East is encouraging small and medium-sized manufacturers to join its latest cohort, offering access to funding and expert guidance to support digital transformation.
The programme provides up to £20,000 in grant funding for new equipment and technology, alongside up to £3500 to access specialist technical advice.
Delivered in the Tees Valley by RTC North, the initiative offers a structured route to digital adoption through a series of workshops, tailored support from sector experts and opportunities to network with other manufacturers.
Businesses taking part complete three core sessions designed to show how digital tools can unlock growth, improve productivity and build long-term resilience.
One company to benefit is Middlesbrough-based Virasel Value Solutions, a specialist engineering firm focused on valve repair, servicing and overhaul.
As the firm expanded and its order book grew, it turned to the programme to help streamline operations.
Support enabled the business to invest in a digital control valve test bench and improve its engineering reporting processes, helping teams work more efficiently and adapt to new technology.
Sue Donnelly, director of operations at Virasel Valve Solutions Ltd, said: “The Made Smarter Programme definitely gave me hope that we can make some really good digital changes which will support the business but, most importantly, support our staff.
“One of my main objectives is for us all, including me and Lee, to have a better home and work-life balance.
“The workshops were excellent – very practical, very relatable, both Andy and Alan were very knowledgeable and shared their real-life work experiences with us, which we would all relate too.
“I personally got a lot out of the workshops – I engaged and talked a lot about Virasel, what we do and the challenges we face, and how the Made Smarter programme can make our lives so much easier.”
She added: “Going digital will help us work more efficiently, without always working longer hours and the weekends.
“The funding is fantastic and I like the idea of having a consultant holding our hand, working with us and supporting us.”
Delivered through a partnership between the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) and the North East Combined Authority, the programme is backed by Government and industry, with businesses encouraged to sign up ahead of the next cohort starting on January 14.
Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen added: “This programme is providing our brilliant manufacturers direct access to the tools, expertise, and funding they need to ensure they maximise their growth.
“Through Made Smarter, we’re already seeing businesses across Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool modernise and compete on a national and global stage.
“We have a real strength in manufacturing and ingenuity and Virasel’s team show just that.
“Made Smarter is there to help firms build on our strengths and make the most of new opportunities.
“I want more manufacturers to come forward, apply to the programme and make the most of what’s on offer – it’s a fantastic opportunity to get ahead.”
Councillor Alec Brown, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and TVCA cabinet member for business growth and net zero, added: “It’s great to see one of our region’s vital manufacturers gain from this programme so it can grow.
“We need as many of our businesses – large and small – to grow sustainably and the support and funding on offer here has delivered results.”
