Durham Skin Lab leads safer sunscreen push
A skincare research company is advancing safer sun protection and developing a new generation of specialist products through cutting-edge laboratory testing.
Durham Skin Lab, based at Drum Industrial Estate near Chester-le-Street, has invested in new technology that allows SPF testing directly on people, helping to improve the accuracy and reliability of sunscreen products.
The facility is believed to be the only laboratory in the North East currently able to carry out this type of in-vivo testing.
The investment forms part of a wider programme of research focused on creating mineral sunscreens that offer stronger protection and greater reassurance for consumers.
To support this work, the lab is inviting volunteers to take part in SPF testing, with participants offered payment for their involvement.
Dr Mohammad Alansary, founder of Durham Skin Lab, said: “Sun protection is one of the most important areas of skincare.
“Testing SPF on people in our studies lets us make products that are safer and more effective.
“We’re proud to push sunscreen science forward and show that County Durham can lead in skincare innovation.”
Working alongside VT Treatment Ltd, the lab has also developed a new mineral sunscreen lotion using safer, natural ingredients instead of harsh chemicals.
While mineral sunscreens are often criticised for leaving a heavy white residue on the skin, the new formulation significantly reduces this effect while maintaining full sun protection.
Dr Alansary added: “We wanted a sunscreen that feels comfortable and looks natural on the skin.
“This one protects without feeling heavy.”
Alongside its sunscreen research, Durham Skin Lab is developing three new international skincare brands, spanning fragranced anti-ageing products, skin and hair care, and ranges designed for pregnancy and babies.
