POW shortlisted for Northern PoWEr Award
A Teesside-based community organisation has been recognised for its work in promoting equality and opportunity for young people.
Power of Women (POW) has been named a finalist in the Micro Organisation category at the 2026 Northern PoWEr Women Awards, which celebrate individuals and organisations driving equity, inclusion and social impact across the North of England.
Established as a community interest company, POW works to raise aspirations, challenge gender stereotypes and build confidence and resilience among children and young people in Teesside.
Its work includes a Primary School Ambassador Programme for pupils aged nine to 11, alongside engagement with secondary schools, further education providers and the wider community.
The organisation also runs a well-established women’s networking group, extending its impact beyond schools.
Sophie McKenna, head of campaign and operations at POW, said: “Being named a finalist is incredibly meaningful for us because it recognises the voices, confidence and ambition of the young people we work with every day.
“Power of Women was created to challenge the idea that background or postcode should limit potential, and this recognition reflects the collective effort of our schools, partners and supporters who believe, as we do, that investing in girls and young people creates lasting change for communities across Teesside.”
The Northern PoWEr Women Awards will mark their tenth anniversary in 2026, recognising a decade of progress in accelerating gender equality, belonging and inclusive leadership across the region.
The awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, March 12, at Manchester Central Convention Complex during the week of International Women’s Day, and is expected to bring together more than 1000 leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers from across the North.
Simone Roche MBE, founder and chief executive of We Are PoWEr, added: “Reaching our tenth year is a powerful moment for the Northern PoWEr Women Awards.
“What began as a bold idea has become a movement that shines a light on those who are not only achieving success but actively using their influence to open doors for others.
“The 2026 finalists reflect the very best of the North – courageous leaders, committed allies and organisations driving real, measurable change.”
