Umpf shifts to employee ownership

A Yorkshire and London-based PR consultancy is entering a new chapter after transitioning to employee ownership and unveiling a refreshed brand identity.

Umpf, which operates from offices in Leeds and London, has become employee-owned through the creation of an Employee Ownership Trust (EoT).

The agency has also launched a new creative identity and website to mark the move, reinforcing a people-first approach designed to secure its long-term independence.

Bosses said the shift to employee ownership aligns with its focus on sustainable growth and high engagement, joining a growing cohort of UK businesses adopting the model.

Founder Adrian Johnson said: “Our success has always been built on the talent and dedication of our brilliant team.

“This structure not only rewards their hard work but also positions us for even greater innovation and client impact as we open the next chapter in our storytelling journey.

“Employee ownership gives the entire team a meaningful stake in the business, fostering greater collaboration, long-term thinking and shared success.

“Locking in our people-first ethos for the long term ensures the team's passion and expertise remain at the heart of the business and launching our new website and creative direction signals the start of an exciting new era – let’s create some noise.”

Founded in 2009, Umpf has grown into one of the North of England’s most decorated PR consultancies, collecting more than 80 industry awards.

Recent accolades include two national CIPR Excellence Awards and two national Revo retail industry awards.

Alongside the transition to an EoT, Umpf has confirmed Smart Works as its second charity partner for 2026 and secured Endometriosis Friendly Employer accreditation.

Milly Rose, senior account director at Umpf, added: “This brand refresh feels like a really big moment for us, but also a natural evolution of where we’re heading.

“The agency has always been shaped by the people in it, so becoming employee-owned just makes that official.

“Moving to an EoT gives everyone in the team a genuine stake in where we’re heading next.

“That kind of ownership boosts the energy, ideas and ambition, which can only be good news for our clients.”

Laura Marks, tax director at RSM, which advised Umpf on the transition, added: “It was a pleasure to advise Adrian and the team at Umpf on their move to employee ownership.

“It’s clear the business has a real passion for its people and the move to employee ownership should further empower them to take the business forward and continue to build on the fantastic brand they have already created.”
