Northern Powerhouse and North East Manufacturing

PLANS to create a Northern Powerhouse and the impact it could have on regional manufacturing are to come under the spotlight. The Government has announced its intention to establish a collective force across the north of England, uniting the 15 million population and creating a stronger voice to rival London and the South East. The move would see North East cities including Newcastle and Sunderland come together with the likes of Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool, and Stockton North MP James Wharton has been tasked with the job of making these plans a reality. Now, the Advanced Manufacturing Forum (AMF) has organised an event with North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC) Chief Executive James Ramsbotham and Leader of South Tyneside Council Iain Malcolm as guest speakers. Mr Ramsbotham will talk about the impact the Northern Powerhouse could have on the region and its manufacturing companies, while Cllr Malcolm will provide an insight into the devolution agenda from a local authority perspective and reiterate South Tyneside Council’s commitment to grow the manufacturing base through the development of the International Advanced Manufacturing Park. Ian Fawdon, Chairman of the AMF, said: “We’re hearing so much about the Northern Powerhouse but what does it actually mean for our business community? That’s what our manufacturers want to know. “At the moment the Northern Powerhouse plans seems to be at the concept stage, so we’ve asked James Ramsbotham from the NECC and Iain Malcolm from South Tyneside Council to give their views and talk about the way forward for our employers.” The ‘North East Devolution and the Northern Powerhouse’ event, which is open to manufacturers from across the region, is being held on Wednesday, July 15, at One Trinity Green in South Shields.
