African performers launch L'Afrique à Newcastle festival
Performers and artists taking part in events during L’Afrique à Newcastle will be giving a taster of what is to come at the launch of the week long African festival. L’Afrique à Newcastle is a week long African festival taking place throughout NewcastleGateshead, Sunderland and Stockton-on-Tees from 18 – 24 September.Venue - Grey’s Monument, NewcastleDate - Tuesday 5th SeptemberTime - 10.30amActs include:Drummed Up, an African drumming ensemble who will kick-start the festival concert at Grey’s Monument on Sept 23.Nuevocastillo, who specialise in afro-cuban music (the name is Spanish for Newcastle), will be performing as part of the NewcastleGateshead Carnival on Sept 23.Joseph Omanga, a Congolese antiquarian who will be giving a talk at the Laing Art Gallery on Sept 20. He will be displaying a large mask that forms part of his personal collection.Connie Yabantu, a South African artist who will be introducing the film “Tsotsi” (which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film) as part of the Film Festival at the Tyneside Cinema.L’Afrique à Newcastle is a week long African festival taking place throughout NewcastleGateshead, Sunderland and Stockton-on-Tees from 18 – 24 September.
