Best NE exporters celebrated
The cream of the region’s exporting entrepreneurs were toasted at a gala celebration last week, as the winners of the North East Export Awards 2006 were unveiled. The climax of the event was the presentation of the annual awards, sponsored by UK Trade & Investment, One NorthEast and the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), which aim to recognise the efforts of the men and women who have helped their companies reach new heights in international trade and contributed to the region’s ongoing success. The winners in the four award categories were: Tania Cooper, Managing Director of Alexander Technologies Europe Ltd, Peterlee, which designs and manufactures primary and rechargeable batteries, chargers and maintenance systems for portable power products; Jane Nolan, Chief Executive of the Shark Group, Morpeth, Northumberland, which produces helicopter passenger survival suits, rebreather systems for helicopter emergency underwater escape and lifejackets with integral rebreather systems for the worldwide offshore oil & gas industry; Graeme Melrose, Senior Engineer, Elfab Ltd, North Shields, which is Europe’s leading manufacturer of pressure management systems including bursting discs, explosion panels and detection; and Eric Donjon, Sales Manager, Entek International Ltd, Killingworth, which manufactures polyethylene battery separators, for use inside car batteries. Ross Cordiner, UK Trade & Investment’s International Trade Director, said: “International Trade remains of great importance to the North East. Some £10.5 billion by value of goods and services is exported from the North East every year and just under 600 businesses have located to the North East from overseas. That represents thousands of jobs to the region and millions of pounds into the North East economy.”
