Get to grips with the EU in a minute
A one minute online guide to the European Union is being launched today by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The website - www.europe.gov.uk – contains a quick guide to the EU institutions, its members and the benefits of membership for the UK. Designed as an animation, the jargon free guide comes as a recent poll reveals that 85% of UK citizens know nothing or little about the EU, its policies and its institutions. In addition, nearly 70% said they would like more information on what the EU does for the individual and two-thirds think the government (national and local) is responsible for providing this information. Commenting on the launch of this initiative Europe Minister Geoff Hoon said: “The one minute guide is a great way to find out more about how the EU works and its impact on all our lives. I hope it will encourage more people to get online to access more information about what the EU is currently doing on the issues which we all care about from tackling climate change to reducing ‘roaming’ costs for mobile phones.”
