Google E-commerce Platform In Development

With Platform OneThis week, the Financial Times reported that Google is planning to build an e-commerce search engine allowing retailers to sell goods online. This proposed e-commerce platform, which reportedly would be an adaptation of Google Base, would be aimed at retailers without an existing online presence, or ones looking to make their service more competitive, and would provide firms using the service access to millions of Google users. This latest ecommerce platform, which would effectively be a consumer facing product search engine, would require retail users to submit data on prices and goods, providing a service which could go head to head with existing online retail services. For SME’s involved in ecommerce this latest move could provide yet another mega stage from which to sell their goods. Stephen Bales, Director of Platform One commented: “Many businesses selling on the net are looking for additional e-commerce platforms to integrate into their selling process and expand their customer base. Over the last few months we have been dealing with literally dozens of businesses, on a daily basis, whose e-commerce strategy has evolved beyond their own website to include eBay as an additional sales platform. All of these businesses have enjoyed great success with this strategy simply because of the volume of potential customers eBay exposes their products to. The inclusion of a Google sales platform would certainly be beneficial and could provide an extremely strong and cohesive ecommerce strategy.“If you have any queries relating to this article, please contact Stephen Bales at Platform One, stephen.bales@platformone.co.uk or call 0191 280 4025.
