International women's organisation coming to NewcastleGateshead

Around 2000 members of the world’s largest service organisation for women will come to NewcastleGateshead for a conference in October. Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation for women in management and the professions, working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women.Sue Crawley, Head of Business Tourism and Membership at NewcastleGateshead Initiative whose convention bureau has helped bring the event to the area said: “Hosting the Soroptimist International conference here in NewcastleGateshead is a real coup. An event of this scale will, of course, have a major impact on the local economy and it is predicted that this conference alone will be worth in the region of £800,000. “Equally important however, is the fact that the conference will bring over 2000 professional women to the area which will really put the spotlight on NewcastleGateshead’s professional community and on NewcastleGateshead as the place in which to meet and network.” Key note speakers at the conference will include Dame Tanni Grey Thompson and Falklands Veteran, Simon Weston. Members will also hear from Pamela Goldberg, Chief Executive of British Cancer Care, International President, Lynn Punning and International Liaison for Project Independence, Dawn Marie Lemonds. Soroptimist International focuses on six programme action areas: human rights for all, education, health, environment, social and economic achievement, international goodwill and understanding.
