Mo Mowlam tribute race at Redcar
Thousands of racegoers at Redcar will be joining in the celebrations tomorrow (Saturday 12th August) to mark the life of the area’s late MP Mo Mowlam. Ms Mowlam was Redcar MP from 1987 to 2001 and also Northern Ireland secretary. She died last year at the age of 55.Redcar Racecourse Chief Executive Neil Etherington said: “I suspect it’s pretty rare that races are named in honour of politicians, which just goes to show why Mo was so different in achieving high office, tackling enormous challenges, especially in her role as Northern Ireland Secretary, yet at the same time never losing that sense of fun and ability to communicate with people at every level.“The Celebrating Mo Mowlam Claiming Stakes will take place at 4.35pm and will be a £4,000 race over a one mile and one furlong for four-year-olds and over. During Saturday’s meeting there will be a collection for the MoMo Helps Fund, the charity set up by Mo Mowlam in 2004 to provide support for families and carers of people with disabilities and recovering and ex-drug users.
