Nexus head to join Ghanaian Chief-led SME

The director general of Tyne and Wear metro, who recently announced he was stepping down after 12 years in post, is joining a Newcastle company responsible for organising volunteering projects in rural communities and adventure trips around the world. Mike Parker recently announced that he is quitting his job as metro chief after a 35-year career in public transport. On leaving he will join Newcastle-based Madventurer which is headed up by a Ghanaian chief. The company, which was founded by Newcastle graduate John Lawler – or Chief Mottey as he is known in Ghana - runs projects in a number of developing countries including Ghana, Fiji, Peru and Tanzania involving students on 8 week ‘gaps’. In his new role, Mike Parker will be responsible for developing similar projects for the over 45’s.John Lawler said: “We are delighted to have Mike on board. Our unique 8 week gap combining 5 weeks on a project helping build a hospital or teaching English, combined with a 3 week adventure, has proved very popular with young people.“Mike Parker said: “I have been very impressed by what Madventurer does in the developing world, and by its rapid growth, and I’m very excited to become part of it.”
