Rare sporting legends? interviews found
Rare interviews with sporting legends Jackie Milburn and Willie Watson have been uncovered during the redevelopment of the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle. The heroes’ family members have been presented original 78 rpm 10“ records of ‘Wor Jackie’ - who despite playing in the 1950’s is still the highest ever scorer for Newcastle United – and Willie Watson, who played for his country in both cricket and football.Eight other identical records are being auctioned on eBay to raise money for the Tyneside Cinema Appeal. The Appeal is raising money to help the cinema achieve its stunning plans for restoring the art deco glory of the original 1937 cinema and, at the same time extending its roof to create two new screens and more space for digital filmmakers of the future to learn their craft. The redevelopments will cost £6.5 million, and so far £6 million has been identified or secured, leaving the Cinema with a final £500,000 to raise. The eBay auction of the sporting legends records start at £20, and the auction closes on Sunday 16th July.
