World Culture Summit on Tyneside

A world summit on Arts and Culture will see culture leaders from around the world converge on NewcastleGateshead. Taking place between 14 and 18 June 2006 at The Sage Gateshead, the Summit is expected to attract an international audience of about 500 cultural leaders, policy makers and regeneration leaders. Bookings have started with delegates registering from countries as far afield as the Seychelles, Botswana, Trinidad, Guyana and Australia.

The Summit will focus on the theme of regeneration through arts and culture: ‘Transforming places, transforming lives’ and will provide inspirational examples of transformation of places and people’s lives through arts and culture. Confirmed speakers include: former freedom fighter, Judge Albie Sachs of the Constitutional Court of South Africa; Lord Puttnam of Queensgate, CBE; Sir Ken Robinson, Senior Adviser, Education, The Getty Foundation; and Jude Kelly OBE from London 2012.

Lending her support to the Summit, Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, said: “NewcastleGateshead is the ideal location for the world’s cultural leaders to meet and to share best practice in regeneration. The city is a shining example of what creativity, imagination and innovation can do.” The summit is hosted by Arts Council England, in partnership with the International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture Agencies (IFACCA).
