Teesside set for celebrations this weekend

The completion of a Square which will play host to a £19m modern art project on Teesside is to be christened with a weekend of celebrations. In the lead up to the opening of mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) early in 2007, the new Middlesbrough Centre Square has been completed.

A free weekend of celebrations has been devised to celebrate the opening. On Saturday 30th September at 6pm there will be a specially commissioned performance by international street theatre company Bedlam Oz to launch the career of Australia’s newest popstar - HarmonyB. HarmonyB will be filming the video for her brand new single, Pinch My Face and people at the event will have the opportunity to appear in the video!

On 1st October Centre Square will be transformed into a huge venue for Tea in the Square with a day-long programme of activities and events suitable for all the family. This includes a walk through maze where you can meet the characters from Alice in Wonderland - a giant chess set - Punch & Judy show, story tellers, live music and street entertainment including internationally renowned artists such as The Avanti Display’s Spurting Man, Bruce Airhead, Titan the Robot, Circo Rum Baba and the The Flying Buttresses.

From 6pm on 1st October the Square becomes the venue for all things Brazilian with a dynamic line up entitled Braziliant! which includes Lady Jane Bongo, DJ Cliffy and Giles Peterson (of Radio 1 fame). After the main event there will be an after show party at Rouge. Entry is by wristband only which can be obtained from Middlesbrough Tourist Information Centre or from www.braziliant.org - profits made on the evening will go to Street Angels charity which helps homeless people in Brazil.
