Urban art on city's streets, websites and art gallery

The UK’s first major international urban art exhibition ‘Spank the Monkey’ is currently taking place at the NewcastleGateshead BALTIC. Bridging the gap between traditional art spaces and the street, Spank the Monkey will also have a presence on the streets of Newcastle and Gateshead with a series of site-specific, one-off artworks.

BALTIC’s New Media sponsor, TH_NK has created an SMS tour to guide people from one artwork to the next, uncovering a city-scape ambush of work by established world art figures - from the infamous Banksy and street art super stars Takashi Murakami and Invader, to Japanese graphic designers, Groovisions.

The exhibition features painting, sculpture, drawing, graphic design, installation, illustration and photography. The art is influenced by independent music, street culture, graphic design, manga comics, skateboarding, surfing, fashion, politics and the conventions of the contemporary art world.

A website ambush campaign is also promoting the exhibition, with some of the region’s leading organisations - including NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Galaxy Radio, The Gate and Gateshead Council - hosting a high-impact splash of digitally mastered street art on their homepage.

All information on the exhibition can also be accessed online at microsite - www.spankthemonkey.uk.net
