Northern Print makes its mark

The North East centre for contemporary printmaking, Northern Print, is reopening on November 1st. The £400k relocation – to a renovated Steenberg’s building in the Ouseburn Valley - will house cutting-edge print facilities and gallery space.

A preview event was held last week. 15 national and international artists contributed to the ‘Making a Mark’ exhibition, designed to demonstrate the diversity of printmaking and its relevance to different artists. To coincide with the opening show, Northern Print is also putting together a publication on what printmaking means today, with contributions from each of the artists on what making prints means to them.

Anna Wilkinson, Director of Northern Print, said: “We are really excited about the new facilities and services we will be able to offer in the new building which will see us building on Northern Print’s growing reputation as a national centre for printmaking and continuing our mission to take printmaking to a much wider audience. “It is a major achievement for us to have the opportunity to relocate to Ouseburn – an area which has already demonstrated that it has the momentum to regenerate – and we are thrilled to be continuing to make a distinctive contribution to arts in the region and to be part of creating, enhancing and promoting this vibrant cultural environment.”

Northern Print hope to help broaden the horizons of those both experienced and inexperienced in printmaking, and will deliver creative workshops for school groups in addition to having an open access policy for professional self-employed artists.
