Durham business park promises boost

The City of Durham’s regeneration scheme was given a boost yesterday as civic leaders and developers teamed up to signal the start of work on a new business park. Mandale Park, formerly the LG Philips site at Belmont Industrial Estate, is expected to deliver 6000 jobs over the next two years.

Teesside based commercial property developers the Mandale Group are working on bringing the site back to life. The first phase will include office units, a crèche, and a café/restaurant. It is anticipated that the first units will be ready for occupation by March next year and discussions have already started with several potential tenants. The Mandale Group hope that Belmont’s prime location will make it one of the City’s most successful and sought after business locations.

Coun Grenville Holland, City of Durham Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: “The restoration of this site, with its promise of many extra jobs, is very welcome. Economic regeneration and enhancement throughout our district will bring many benefits to our residents and this flagship development accords well with our long term strategies for the welfare of Durham.”

Brian Walker, Deputy leader of Durham County Council and County Durham Development Company board director, said: “This is a tremendous development, not only for the people of Durham City but for the whole of the County. This is just the latest of several massive job-creating developments that have been announced recently, which between them promise over 12,000 new jobs. This is a clear indication of a growing belief in County Durham’s importance as a strategic location for major commercial developments.”
