Glowing cocktails for Winter Festival

A North East barman is set to receive a glowing reception after creating cocktails to be served during a forthcoming Tyneside event. Bars throughout the city will be selling a range of limited edition Glow cocktails as part of this year’s NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival.

The magenta pink cocktails – Glow Cocktail, Champagne Glow and Glow Soft – have been designed to match the colour of the Glow event, and will be sold in bars and venues around the city. The Glow Cocktail includes two shots of white rum, one part soda water and three drop of Angostura Bitters, two parts cranberry juice and a slice of lime while Glow Royale consists of champagne, a dash of Crème de Cassis or Chambord and a raspberry garnish. Glow Soft is a non-alcoholic cocktail with three parts milk, crushed ice and one shot of non-alcoholic Grenadine.

Carlo Santonastaso, who created the drinks, said: “I was given the job to design cocktails to match the pink light. It was trial and error from there. As a barman I knew which spirits matched, it was just getting the colour right.”

Stella Hall, Creative Director at NewcastleGateshead Initiative which has commissioned Glow in partnership with Newcastle and Gateshead councils, said: “We want local people and businesses to really get behind the festival and help get NewcastleGateshead glowing in some fun and imaginative ways. It doesn’t just have to be about lighting a building and the Glow cocktails are a great example of this.”

Glow will be taking place over two weekends, November 30 - December 2 and December 7 – 9, from 5pm until 9pm. Further information on Glow and NewcastleGateshead Winter Festival 06 can be found at www.NewcastleGateshead.com, including full details of bars and restaurants which will be serving Glow cocktails.
