Tyneside Cinema reels in funding

The Tyneside Cinema is celebrating this week after raising £6.5 million for its redevelopment appeal. The support it has received from both institutional supporters and individual members of the public across the region has secured the venue’s plans for restoration and extension.

Geoff Cook, chair of trustees of the Tyneside Cinema, said: “We only announced the public fundraising appeal in the Spring and yet here we are in November, having achieved our target! So we want to say an epic thank you to everyone who has contributed to this success.

“Our team has been working incredibly hard to secure the support from major funders. “We have had tremendous support from the public too. Over 600 individuals have given donations and pledged their support in so many ways: 7 year old Millie Jobson, the first supporter of the public appeal, emptied her piggy bank for us, others have given generously to the ‘Keep the Change’ campaign running in the Cinema and the Coffee Rooms and people are still wanting to help by buying seats and posters from the special sale on Saturday November 25th.”

George Snaith, Executive Director, TyneWear Partnership said: “Film represents a significant growth area within the Tyne and Wear economy and the Tyneside Cinema has a key role to play in developing the sector, which is why the Partnership felt it was so important to support the development of the cinema.”
