Durham photographer puts success in the frame

A Durham based student photographer has recently been announced as Professional Photography Magazine’s Student Photographer of the Year. Rob Birrell is currently a final year mature student studying for an HND in Photography and Digital Imaging at City of Sunderland College. The award-winning photograph entitled “Mobile Phone!” was taken as part of a college assignment on Stock Library Photography.

On completion of the course Rob hopes to embark on a career as a commercial photographer providing creative photography for advertising and editorial to businesses both locally and nationally. He made the switch to photography after 17 years in IT when redundancy from previous employment in Darlington prompted him to reassess his life.

Rob said: “Redundancy and growing discontent with the industry persuaded me to take the plunge and follow my lifelong passion for photography. In particular my pursuit of travel images has taken me to Chile, India, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and South East Asia to name but a few destinations. Most recently, studying for an HND in Photography and Digital Imaging has enabled me to hone my existing skills and to branch out and explore new avenues while maintaining my love of landscape, travel, and wildlife photography.”

Rob’s work can be viewed at www.robbirrell.co.uk.
