College joins motor race

Gateshead College has joined a new national consortium of colleges dedicated to delivering excellence to the UK’s automotive industry. The Motor Industry Skills Consortium is a partnership between the UK’s leading colleges in the field of automotive training, created to set benchmarks and engage employers in developing a highly skilled and professional workforce.

Mick Brophy, Gateshead College assistant principal for adult and higher education, said: “This is not only excellent news for the college but for students and the region’s automotive industry, who can now be confident that trainees from Gateshead College are of the same high calibre as trainees from London, Glasgow or Manchester. “This is another step towards presenting Gateshead College as a quality training provider on a national stage. Now, as part of the Motor Industry Skills Consortium, we are more likely to be approached by national, even multi-national employers. Ultimately, we hope the consortium will offer a practical training solution for national organisations.”

The consortium will also disseminate good practice while developing and sustaining industry standard facilities across the UK’s colleges. Their stated intention is to work to create innovative, sustainable training for the future of the industry. For further information visit www.gateshead.ac.uk.
