75% of UK watch digital TV
Three out of four households now watch digital television. According to Ofcom, 73.3% of the UK’s TV watchers now view a digital service on their main television. 600,000 of these viewers have started watching digital terrestrial television for the first time in 2006. An increasing number of households are now also watching digital television on second or third TV sets around the house, in addition to their main set.
Over 2 million more households now have at least one Freeview set-top-box (digital terrestrial television) in their home when compared to 2005, making the total number 9.3 million. However, digital satellite television remains the most popular digital platform for UK households. 33.9% of homes now subscribe to BSkyB’s services or receive free-to-view satellite services, an increase of 128,000 since June 2006. Between 2008 and 2012, older analog television signals will be switched off.
