Lucky Newcastle in top ten

Newcastle is one of the ten luckiest places in the UK, according to the latest figures from the National Lottery. The Newcastle postcode area (NE) enters the top 10 for the first time since statistics were published in 2002, ranking as the 10th luckiest place in the UK for lottery windfalls. Since the lottery was launched in November 1994, £241,357,630 in major prizes has been paid out in the area. More than £500 million in prize money has been paid out in the North East region as a whole, which is home to 106 lottery millionaires.

Top of the list of luckiest postcodes this year was Ilford (IG), with neighbouring Romford (RM) closely following in second place and the Medway Towns (ME) in third position. The number in Newcastle equates to one major prize-winning ticket in every 8,643 people, compared to Ilford’s one in 7,501.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: “With four million winners created each week across all games and an average of 16 millionaires created in every postcode area in the UK since launch, I think it is fair to say that lucky hotspots are everywhere. “It’s great to see Newcastle in the top 10 luckiest postcodes – Geordies are known for being happy-go lucky and that optimism has clearly helped them improve their ranking over the last year.”
