Mountain rescuers get cash boost

Mountain rescuers have received a boost with a gift of more than £1,000 donated by a team of outdoor enthusiasts from Procter & Gamble. Six members of P&G staff from across the company’s three North-East sites took part in the Reivers Intercompany Kielder Challenge, taking up the challenge for the fourth year running. The team also organised a charity gig to raise funds, with all the money going to The Mountain Rescue Council (MRC).

On the Reivers Challenge the mental and physical tasks ranged from constructing their own shelter to sleep in after a day of demanding challenges, to navigating a rope course through the tree tops. Five members of the team were “rookie challengers”, with only the captain having taken part before. The inexperienced team were pleased with their result, coming 20th out of 80 teams.

Ignacio Gallo, the team leader, from P&G’s Newcastle Technical Centre (NTC) in Longbenton, said: “We are delighted with the amount raised for the MRC. As well as raising money for a great cause, the Challenge was a fantastic team-building experience – you get to know colleagues a lot better whilst camping out in the wilds!”

Shirley Priestley, the North East Search & Rescue Association representative for the MRC, said: “I would like to thank the P&G team very much on behalf on the MRC for their significant donation. As a purely voluntary body, with no main source of funding, we rely completely upon the contributions of our members, volunteers and fundraisers like the P&G team.”
