Garage takes its place on the 'green fuel' route
A service station on one of the region’s key tourism routes is the latest to join the network of ‘One Green Route’ garages offering locally-produced biodiesel to motorists. The Hinderwell Service Station is now part of the initiative spearheaded by the NorthEast Biofuels consortium which brings together petrochemical businesses, farmers, agricultural suppliers and the regional development agency One NorthEast.
The ‘Bio-plus’ fuel now available at the garage is a blend of 95 per cent low sulphur diesel and 5 per cent biodiesel made from a variety of sources including rape seed oil. The fuel is supplied from the Petroplus refinery at North Tees.
Renew Tees Valley, the company promoting renewable energy and recycling developments in the area and a member of the NorthEast Biofuels consortium, stressed the importance of encouraging motorists in the region to make the switch to more environmentally-friendly fuels.
Doctor Dermot Roddy, Chief Executive of Renew Tees Valley, said: “This area is now widely recognised as the UK’s leading centre for renewable energy developments and NorthEast Biofuels and its partners have been working hard to persuade both private motorists and fleet operators of the benefits of using fuels such as biodiesel. “People won’t make the switch unless the fuel is readily available which is why the One Green Route initiative was launched and has been taken up by garages from Northumberland to North Yorkshire.”
