Royal accolades for North East businesses

The annual winners and recipients of The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise were announced on 21 April, The Queen’s birthday. They are the UK’s most prestigious accolades for business-related achievement and a total of 119 business Awards and 11 individual Awards have been conferred this year.

In the North East Awards have gone to three organisations ranging from a company which makes chemical absorbers, a manufacturer of cast rolls for the ferrous and non-ferrous metal forming industries and a firm which has developed a coating for ship hulls and propellers to reduce the number of marine organisms that stick to them.

This is the third year of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion (QAEP), an Award for individuals who have played an outstanding and significant role in promoting the growth of enterprise and entrepreneurial skills and attitudes in others. Recipients include Geoffrey Ford of Tyne and Wear, Terry Owens of Middlesbrough and Caroline Theobald of Newcastle.

The Queen’s Awards for businesses honour outstanding UK companies and are made in three separate categories: International Trade, Innovation, and Sustainable Development.

Richard Lambert, Director-General of the CBI, said: “Winning a Queen’s Award for Enterprise is a tremendous achievement and this year’s winners are very worthy recipients that reflect the strength and diversity of UK plc. Whether they have been recognised for their successes in international trade, innovation or sustainable development, all are great examples of how enterprise and acumen can improve a business and drive its success.”

North East business winners are The Davy Roll Company Ltd of Gateshead, The Gas Processing Division of Johnson Matthey Catalysts of Billingham, and International Paint Ltd (Marine Division) of Gateshead.
