College lends spanner to China

Chinese education chiefs are returning to Newcastle College this week to search for new initiatives in managing their training for motor vehicle mechanics. The delegation, made up of senior representatives of the Chinese Department of Education from the Guangdong Province, are visiting Newcastle College from 14 to 25 May to learn more about how vocational education works in the UK and discuss a long term partnership with the college.

Newcastle College is one of only two colleges in the UK to be singled-out by the British Council and the Chinese Department of Education to help develop vocational education in Chinese colleges and universities. Although many colleges throughout the UK were considered, Newcastle was chosen because it is recognised by the British Government as a Beacon College.

The Chinese delegation will focus on teacher training, curriculum development and how Newcastle College manages its curriculum within automotive engineering. The team will then use this information to implement the UK system in China.

Colin Booth, Director of Learner Engagement at Newcastle College, said: “We are delighted to have struck up this partnership with China. It shows that the College is continuing to develop its reputation not only in the UK but throughout the world. “The trip will be beneficial for both parties, with representatives from China being able to experience the UK vocational education system first-hand and Newcastle College increasing its own links with overseas employers.”
