Stars tee off for the Prince's Trust

The most prestigious charity golf tournament to be held in the North East is about to tee off today, and it’s all in aid of the region’s young people. The inaugural Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy celebrity amateur golf tournament will take place at Slaley Hall in Northumberland, and is part of a series of events which will see two teams of sports personalities and stars of stage and screen do battle in sporting arenas across the region.

The Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy will see North and South of the region go head-to-head under the colours of the team presidents, His Grace, The Duke of Northumberland and The Right Honourable Earl of Durham, Lord Durham. Two world class athletes have been confirmed as team coaches across all four Challenge Trophy events – golf, cricket, shooting and football – which are Jonathan Edwards CBE for “The Duke’s Team” and Steve Cram MBE for “The Earl of Durham’s Team”.

Jonathan Edwards CBE said: “The people of the North East are mad about sport, so I hope they will show their support for the Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy and help young people right here in the North East to turn their lives around.”

Steve Cram MBE said: “This is going to be a hotly contested battle between The Duke’s Team and The Earl’s Team held at four great sporting venues with more celebrities than you can count – who would want to miss it?”

David Beavis, regional director for The Prince’s Trust, said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play golf with some very high profile celebrities whilst contributing towards a great cause. All profits made will go towards the work The Prince’s Trust does with disadvantaged young people living in the North East.”

After the full day event, there will be a presentation dinner and charity auction in the evening. The celebrity golf tournament is not open to spectators, however there is an all-star 20Twenty cricket match at Durham County Cricket Club on 2 September and an all-star football match planned at St James’ Park (date to be confirmed) which tickets will be available for soon. A celebrity amateur clay shoot at Mitford Hall, Northumberland on 24th Sept 2007 is open to corporate bookings.
