North East fooled by Bank of Shearer?
We’ve all heard about the ‘dodgy’ bank notes doing the rounds at the moment – the ones with Alan Shearer or Homer Simpson on them – but now the public are being warned not to accept these notes as legal tender. Shopkeepers, bar staff and pensioners are being warned that they may be targeted as ways for unscrupulous individuals to offload the joke notes as real currency. The notes were seized by consumer watchdogs at a car boot sale in the North East and the seller was given a warning.
Director of development and entertainment for Gateshead Council Sheila Johnston said: “On the face of it these are just a bit of fun – but it’s doubtful whether the owners of these images would share that view. However, these notes look just like real banknotes when they are folded in two and we are very concerned that some people may be conned into accepting them as legal tender.”
We’d like to give people a bit more credit. Here in the North East most of us can tell the difference between the Queen and Homer Simpson.
