Aspire helps employers make a difference to young people

A North East culture change programme has created a regional resource for local employers wanting to attract young people into their workforce. Aspire is a programme from the North East Chamber of Commerce and the CBI North East geared towards helping employers reach young people to change their career outlook of the North East.

Aspire has developed an online range of case studies of businesses showing how they work with young people, detailing the lessons they have learned along the way and the benefits to their business. In addition they intend to establish an online database of learning and work brokers and programmes in the region to act as a resource that employers can use to connect with young people.

As well as its online resource, Aspire is taking its message to every employer in the region through a communications campaign this year, showcasing best practice examples of youth-friendly companies in the local media, in sector events, and via an electronic newsletter.

Mary Coyle, Chief executive of Aspire, said: “We are clearly reaching out to employers in all sectors and from all sizes of business across the North East to ask what they are doing to stem the skills shortage that lies ahead, and when we find a company being proactive and reaping rewards we are shouting about it to motivate others. “Every employer needs to know that investing in our young people is the future of their own business, as well as of the regional economy. We want to inspire them to act, by showing them how other companies are blossoming as a result of a healthy attitude to bringing young people into their workforce.”
