North East student receives top award

A North East student has received the Institution of Civil Engineers’ (ICE) Award for 2007 at the end of a degree which saw her receive a number of accolades.

Kate Palmer, 22, from Seaham, was presented with the award at Newcastle University’s graduation ceremony, after the Board of Examiners selected her as showing great proficiency in civil engineering design.

During her four years studying towards a Masters degree in civil engineering, Kate has spent three-and-a-half years on the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) regional Graduates & Students Committee. In this time she has also been the university’s student representative and worked on an ICE QUEST scholarship with Sir Robert McAlpine and a summer placement for Arup, leading to final year sponsorship.

As well as the ICE Award, Kate also won the Cassie Prize for Design, the Jacobs Prize for best dissertation and the Stage 4 ConstructionSkills Award for work in civils and geometrics.

Stephen Larkin, ICE North East’s regional manager, said: “Kate has been a hugely active member of ICE’s Graduates & Students Committee during her time at university, so when I learned that the board of examiners had selected her for the ICE prize I knew that it had gone to a very deserving young lady. At 22, she has an excellent career ahead of her and all of us in the North East wish her the best of luck for the future.”
