Celebrating with accountant friends in the North

A play set in the North East which inspired a hit TV drama series has won financial support from the region’s chartered accountants. As part of its 125th anniversary celebrations, the Northern Society of Chartered Accountants (NSCA) will sponsor the 6 October evening performance of Jarrow-born Peter Flannery’s Our Friends in the North.

The Northern Stage production, which runs in Newcastle from 29 September to 20 October, tracks the fortunes of four friends whose lives take very different paths during the 1960s and 1970s. Flannery’s Bafta award-winning, nine-part TV serialisation in 1996 launched the acting careers of Christopher Eccleston, Daniel Craig, Mark Strong and Gina McKee.

Pam Clarke, NSCA president, said: “We were looking for a way of marking our 125th anniversary which reflected our strong regional roots – and Our Friends in the North seemed to fit the bill perfectly. We are particularly delighted to be involved in Northern Stage’s revival of the play in Newcastle, which is the ideal venue for the production.”

Director Erica Whyman said: “Our Friends in the North means so much to so many people in the North East, full of humour, wisdom and sharp political analysis. Northern Stage is very proud to be bringing Our Friends back home and delighted that this important show has the support of the NSCA.”

Northern Stage is the North East’s largest producing theatre company. Following a £9.5million refurbishment, the theatre re-opened in August 2006 on the site of the old Playhouse in Newcastle city centre.
