Seaham jobs 'bonanza'

Jobcentre Plus is helping a range of employers from the retail and food processing industries fill 1000 new jobs in Seaham through one of the largest co-ordinated recruitment drives they have handled in the region.

Advisers from Jobcentre Plus in South Tyne and Wear Valley have teamed up with high street names to recruit around 700 people for vacancies in the new Byron Place retail development in the centre of Seaham. They are also helping Cumbrian Seafoods fill around 300 jobs in their new factory at the nearby Foxcover Distribution Park.

All of the stores due to open in Byron Place have taken advantage of Jobcentre Plus’s offer to help recruit their new teams. To help them get the right people, Jobcentre Plus advisers have carried out a range of activities such as organising jobsfairs, producing promotional materials, sifting applications and providing office space for interviews.

In addition, Jobcentre Plus has organised training with Finchale College for a number of jobseekers with disabilities who are due to start work at the new ASDA superstore in Seaham in September.

Dave Peebles, district manager for Jobcentre Plus in South Tyne and Wear Valley said: “We are excited to be involved in such a fantastic development for Seaham and the local community. Co-ordinating a recruitment programme on this scale is an exciting challenge for us and we are delighted by the commitment shown by these employers in helping many of our customers back into work.”
