Birth of a new drink from North East entrepreneur

A new North East drinks company is set to launch the country’s first sugar free alcopop. Baby Pink and Baby Blue are the brainwave of Sunderland woman Lorraine Griffiths, who came up with the idea after working for years in the bar and club industry.

Lorraine realised that many of her female customers were looking for alternatives to the traditional alcopops and started to investigate the possibility of setting up a brand with no additional sugar in the drink. Baby Pink and Baby Blue are now set to launch at venues around the region from late September, with plans to roll out nationwide shortly afterwards.

Lorraine, who has launched a new company, Alcohol Brands, to market and sell the range, said: “I did quite a lot of research and then worked with a number of different providers to set up the new brand. There has already been a lot of interest in it and a number of major operators in the North East and in the North West have agreed to stock it. In my experience of working in the bar industry more and more women were asking about the amount of sugar in drinks so it seemed only logical to find them an alternative.”

The wine-based drink, which is four per cent proof, comes in blueberry flavour (Baby Blue), and citrus lemon (Baby Pink). Lorraine is now marketing the drinks to other leisure companies around the UK and believes that Baby Pink and Baby Blue will be occupying a current gap in the market.
