Agency approves £2.14m funding for marina regeneration
Regional development agency One NorthEast has approved more than £2m of funding to kick-start the regeneration of a town’s marina, bringing with it 12 new businesses and around 50 new jobs. Work will start on the redevelopment of Seaham’s North Dock early next year, after the application for £2.14m of Single Programme funding was successful.
The District of Easington Council is leading the project, which will see the creation of a marina, catering for up to 77 boats, and workspace accommodation for marina-related businesses. It is hoped the work will bring economic life back to the North Dock area, and will build on the comprehensive package of regeneration projects already underway in Seaham.
Ed Rowley, Acting Director of Regeneration at One NorthEast, said: “I am delighted One NorthEast has approved this funding, which will enable the North Dock area of Seaham to undergo a much needed make-over. “The creation of a marina, with workspace units to house marina-related businesses, certainly has huge potential. “The day-to-day running of the site will be handled by a new Community Interest Company (CIC), known as the Seaham Harbour Investment Partnership.
Councillor Rob Crute, District of Easington Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “This award is excellent news for our plans for the North Dock. This project aims to bring in the vital revenue which will ensure that the site will be economically sustainable.”
The workspace accommodation on the site will be operated on an easy in/easy out basis, and will cater for up to 12 businesses.
