North East innovators launch 'Virtual Veins'

A Northumberland-based manufacturer of virtual reality training solutions has secured the first sale of its ‘Virtual Veins’ product to Sheffield Hallam University. UK Haptics’ new product is designed to encourage learning and skills rehearsal in medical and clinical situations. It allows trainees to practice venepuncture on a virtual 3D hand. The product will facilitate greater accuracy, offering users feedback on performance before carrying out procedures on patients.

Cels, the organisation aiding the growth of North East England’s healthcare economy, has backed the product through its development. Through its Healthcare Network, Cels has provided UK Haptics valuable business advice, support and access to industry networking forums.

Gary Todd, Managing Director at UK Haptics said: “We have been approached by potential customers in the US, Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia. We could not have made such swift progress had it not been for Cels’ support.”

Mike Hartley, Cels Healthcare Network commented: “It is through companies such as UK Haptics that we are going to drive the growth of the North East’s healthcare economy. Our Healthcare Network really does open up opportunities for companies. If we can encourage more SMEs to utilise the existing support and skills within the region to their advantage, then we will certainly make a difference to this sector, both regionally and nationally.”
