Global arts experts flock to NewcastleGateshead

An American invasion will descend on NewcastleGateshead this week for a conference at the Sage Gateshead. The conference, looking at the techniques, history and conservation of printed media has been organised jointly by the American Institute of Conservation (AIC) and Northumbria University’s Conservation Unit. It is the first time the AIC has held a conference outside of America.

Jane Colbourne, Project Manager and Senior Lecturer in Conservation of Fine Art at Northumbria, said: “Our MA Conservation of Fine Art programme ranks in the top ten in the world and our links with the United States have always been strong. This conference is an absolute accolade for Northumbria and the North East in general. In addition to the conference, delegates from across the globe will have the opportunity to see some of the iconic buildings on NewcastleGateshead’s waterfront and a banquet at Alnwick Garden is also being organised.”

In total 25 papers will be given by curators, historians, librarians, archivists, conservators and scientists from countries throughout the world. The speakers represent many of the institutions and collections from throughout the world including the National Gallery of Australia, Harvard University, The Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Canada, the Paul Getty Museum and the National Museum Norway.

Participants will find themselves sharing knowledge with respected authorities on the techniques, history and conservation of printed media.
