Durham triumph in celebrity charity cricket match
A recent celebrity cricket match saw the Earl of Durham beat the Duke of Northumberland in a close-fought match at the Durham Riverside Stadium.
The Earl’s team triumphed on Sunday after amassing a total of 186-7, whilst the Duke of Northumberland’s squad scored 181-7. The Challenge Trophy scoreboard is now back on evens after the Duke of Northumberland’s team won the charity golf event earlier in the year. Durham County Cricket professional Steve Harmison was captain for the Duke’s team whilst Neil Killeen captained Earl of Durham’s winning side on the day.
Steve Harmison said: “We have all had a really good day, everything went well and the weather was great. It is disappointing that the Duke’s team lost today but everybody is here in good team spirit and the most important thing is about raising as much money as we can for The Prince’s Trust. “It was great to see other sportsmen and celebrities come out of their comfort zone and play cricket for charity.”
Neil Killeen said “I’m really pleased my team won, the game was played in the right manner; it involved serious play and a lot of fun banter between the players which entertained the crowd and hopefully raised a lot of money for the charity.”
The cricket game was the second in a series of four celebrity sport events which sees two teams of sports personalities, film stars, and TV names do battle in sporting venues across the region. The first event teed off in July with a Celebrity Amateur Golf Tournament at Slaley Hall. Forthcoming Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy events include a celebrity amateur clay shoot at Mitford Hall, Northumberland on 24th Sept 2007 and a football match at St James’ Park.
