Design goes back to its roots with Our Friends In The North
North East design talent is to be celebrated with an exhibition focusing on the high profile work of ten designers from the region. Our Friends In The North is part of this year’s Design Event, the North East’s annual design festival taking place from 11-28 October 2007. Now in its third year, Design Event 07 includes exhibitions covering graphics, fashion, furniture, film and product design at a host of venues across the region.
The people behind Our Friends In The North are Richard Short of Studio Lobster - whose work spans over 15 years, concentrating on record sleeve and youth culture design - and Colin Davies. They describe Our Friends In The North as: ‘tracing the evolution of technique, process and training in graphic design between 1977 and 2007 through some of the world’s most acclaimed artists who have their roots in the North East.’
Colin said: “This exhibition is all about showcasing the hotbed of design talent borne out of this area. “As many young designers move to other areas of the country and the world to achieve their goals, it is sometimes forgotten that some of the most iconic design work we have seen in film, music and other media over the years has been produced by people born and trained in the region.”
Designers in the Our Friends In The North exhibition include David Malone of Malone Design, who created the iconic Jamiroquai sleeve for ‘Travelling Without Moving’, as well as Mark Blamire from Blanka and Neue Laboratories who puts his name to the film graphics from infamous British film ‘Trainspotting’.
The main exhibition opens to the public on Saturday 13 October at the Robert Stephenson Centre on Newcastle’s South Street (behind Central station) in North East England; a region renowned for its design talent and the birthplace of the world’s landmark inventions such as the steam locomotion and the electric lightbulb.
