Fish Fayre to launch initiative for North Shields fishermen
Fishing communities in North Shields are being given help to secure the long term future of their industry. The project is being run by Business in the Community, one of HRH The Prince of Wales’s charities.
The project, which was inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales, is funded by the Marine and Fisheries Agency to examine how the fishing communities in the North Shields area can ensure the sustainability of their industry. At present, research is being conducted into the areas of greatest need; thereafter recommendations will be presented for practical measures to help the local fishermen operate most effectively in today’s competitive food market.
To highlight the project, Business in the Community is hosting a family day at the Fish Quay in North Shields on Saturday 6 October from 11am. The centrepiece of the event will see Head Chef at the Pump Room restaurant, Anthony Heath, demonstrating how to prepare locally caught fish for family meals. Local producers will be present selling their wares and visitors can pick up a series of discounts for local restaurants and retailers.
Early in 2008, Business in the Community will host a ‘Seeing is Believing’ visit for senior business leaders to tour the Fish Quay and discuss the problems faced by the industry with local fishermen. It is anticipated that those business leaders, which will include representatives from some of the UK’s largest food retailers, will suggest ways in which the fishermen can improve their access to major supermarkets and market their products.
