Local business kits out kids for cleaner streets

A Newcastle marketing company is helping pupils in the city play their part in a cleaner, safer city this term. Over sixty children have signed up to join regular patrols around their neighbourhoods, spotting and reporting environmental issues as part of a new Junior Wardens scheme backed by Newcastle New Deal for Communities. Foundry Media offered to design and pay for the production of two hundred professional-style wardens’ uniforms to help the pint-sized patrollers look the part.

The children, from St Paul’s and St Michael’s schools, will join New Deal Neighbourhood Wardens on regular environmental patrols, helping to spot problems like litter, graffiti and dog fouling and helping the authorities to take action.

Alan Toward of the New Deal Neighbourhood Wardens said: “The children will go out once a week with adult wardens and teachers, spotting environmental problems, learning about the impact they make and getting them followed up. “Foundry Media have provided the uniforms for nothing and the kids really love them. This scheme is all set to make a real difference.”

Foundry Media is in its sixth year of trading and based at the Lynnwood Business Centre in the West End of Newcastle, where it has built links with many grassroots projects.

Neil Foster, Marketing Manager at Foundry Media, said: “Foundry Media are a local socially-minded business and we work with a lot of projects in the area, so it’s good to be able to put something back into the community. “We believe this project can make a real difference across the community - the kids are so enthusiastic and they love their uniforms.”

The junior warden scheme is the latest in a string of New Deal-backed projects working to improve the West End’s environment.
