New job worse than giving birth

Starting a new job is more stressful than going to the dentist or giving birth, according to a survey of workers. And three out of four make at least one gaffe in their first week at work, the poll of 1,000 employees by recruitment firm Office Angels said last week.

The most common mistakes included mixing up colleagues’ names, getting lost, being late and mistaking a manager for a junior member of staff. Many of those questioned spoke of the stress and anxiety of starting a new job because of concerns that they would not be able to get on with colleagues, would say something stupid or wear the wrong clothes. The study showed that the first day in a new job is more stressful than going to the dentist, taking an exam, meeting the in-laws or even having children.

David Clubb of Office Angels said: “All good employers will recognise what a challenge the first day can be and will do their best to make you feel welcome and at home. However, employees can also take steps themselves to ensure the first day isn’t completely terrifying. If in doubt, email in advance with any important questions, such as the dress code or who you should report to on your first day. If you feel brave enough, you could even ask if there are any team events that you could go along to before starting, for example a team lunch or after-work drink. That way you’ll know a few friendly faces when you arrive.”

A random poll of mothers unsurprisingly disputed the claims that giving birth was easier, saying they’d take a new job any day of the week.
