Knowledge wins major defence contract

Northern Defence Industries (NDI) has agreed a new deal with North East business provider Knowledge I.T for the largest infrastructure refresh in its history. NDI represents over 200 companies in the defence and aerospace sector in the North of England.

Originally based in Sunderland’s Business Innovation Centre, NDI relocated to Newcastle’s Central Square South in April in advance of the launch of the Marine Design Centre. This new facility has been designed to allow design engineers from within the region to collaborate on international marine projects. It is the first of its kind in the UK, serving three distinct global markets including commercial shipping, oil and gas renewables and defence.

The Knowledge contract, worth £100,000 to the Washington-based firm, has already seen the implementation of a new network infrastructure to deal with the demands of NDI’s on-going expansion.

Trevor Harrison, group managing director of NDI, said: “Technology lies at the heart of NDI, with every department relying heavily upon intuitive and stable IT systems. The Marine Design Centre required an extremely high-spec level of equipment to cope with the computer aided design environment. “Knowledge offered an impressive, durable and cost effective solution to meet these demands, while providing a stable and low risk platform to meet our daily business needs.”

George Sanger, Knowledge’s sales and marketing director, said: “We spent a lot of time with NDI understanding their business strategy. We then worked with them to create a package which would meet their individual needs, providing a flexible, cost effective ICT solution. We hope to see the completion of the project by the end of September at which time NDI will be able to fully reap the benefits of their investment in a state-of-the-art ICT environment.”
