New plans for Durham business park

Plans for a £150m business park which could create around 4,000 jobs have been put before Durham City Council. The development on the site of the Mount Oswald Golf Course in Durham would consist of both office and research space.

There would also be housing, a new public park for the city and the listed Mount Oswald Manor would be restored. Local property company Banks Developments is now seeking public views on the plans. The scheme includes measures to encourage the use of more sustainable modes of transport, such as public transport, cycling and walking. Linked water features would help meet some of the scheme’s energy requirements, and 100,000 new trees and shrubs would be planted.

Mark Dowdall, environment and community director at Banks Developments, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to create a world class business and research community in Durham which would attract investment and jobs to the city, as well as providing many acres of new public open space for local residents.

“The designs that we have put forward for this scheme are firmly based around sustainability principles, as well as being sensitive to the development’s historic surroundings. “We very much hope that the economic, social, recreational, landscape and ecological benefits of the scheme to both the local area and the wider region will be recognised by the City Council.”
