Toon to get wireless CCTV cameras

Wireless CCTV cameras may soon be deployed in crime “hot spots” across Newcastle city centre. The move is part of plans by BT and Newcastle Council to expand wireless technology in the city.

Plans could see wi-fi internet access in main shopping and tourist quarters as well as stretches of the quayside. Wireless CCTV cameras would be used to monitor known trouble areas and would be capable of being deployed much quicker than traditional fixed cameras. Real-time footage can be viewed by the police through wireless handheld devices, creating a safer street environment. Wireless CCTV can also be used to monitor parking congestion and parking attendants can be quickly deployed to problem areas.

Simon Roberson, BT’s regional manager for the North East, said: “This is a really exciting step forward for everyone in Newcastle. It will open up a raft of new opportunities for local businesses, citizens and visitors, ensuring they are best connected.”

Newcastle City Council leader John Shipley said: “This partnership with BT has already created a superb wireless network, which is great news for businesses and individuals in the city. “Newcastle has ambitions to be foremost in science and technology. Becoming a wireless city is a key building block in the achievement of our ambitions.”
