Regeneration leads the way on renewable technologies

A North East regeneration initiative is helping to address the growing threat of climate change and hopes to achieve national status with the new appointment of a new Sustainability Advisor. Keith Melton, Director of Technology at the New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC), will work closely with the South East Northumberland and North Tyneside Regeneration initiative (SENNTRi) to offer advice on the implementation of renewable technologies for a variety of regeneration projects taking place across the area.

Keith Melton, Director of Technology at NaREC, said: “This is a significant step forward for the region in helping to reduce our energy consumption levels, and will hopefully encourage other organisations to work with us to help accelerate their own sustainability agendas. “With all new developments now required to supply 10 percent of their energy requirements from renewable sources, we have developed a toolkit to help developers meet these targets and this is one of the ways in which we will be able to offer support to SENNTRi and its partners.”

SENNTRi was formally launched four years ago to rejuvenate the area of Wansbeck, Blyth Valley and North Tyneside with an aim to revive its social and economic performance.

Jeremy Sherlock, Director at SENNTRi, said: “One of SENNTRi’s main objectives is the promotion of high standards of development including sustainability and renewable technology initiatives that would make this sub region a national exemplar. To be able to realise this ambition we need impartial, practical advice on what actually works, and what proposals could be developed in the sub region, which is why we have chosen to work with NaREC.”
