Sustainability top of the agenda at new debate
The first in a new series of free debates examining ways of improving the sustainability of regional buildings and improving the lives of communities gets underway next month. Organised by Northern Architecture, the initial event is being held on 12 November at Newcastle Civic Centre and will look at sustainable cities.
It is the first of five events which hope to raise the level of debate about how the North East should respond to climate change. At each event a panel of experts will talk about the sustainability issues that concern regional architects, engineers, planners, developers, policy makers and others. The November event features a panel of experts from design and business consultancy firm Arup, urban planning and design practice Urban Initiatives, and sustainable transport charity Sustrans. They will look at ways of creating long-lasting and eco-friendly neighbourhoods.
They will also discuss what impact these have on peoples’ lives and the first time house buyers’ market, and propose guidelines for planners and other professionals trying to create more sustainable communities and cities.
Andrew Guest, director of Northern Architecture, said: “If we want our children and grandchildren to live in a world where they have the same choices and the freedom to meet their needs as we have, it is vital that we as a region address issues that will affect future generations. These include rising carbon emission levels, resource depletion and waste. We will raise the level of debate and focus it on regional challenges and solutions.
“These events should be a must for any architects, planners, engineers, developers, project managers, policy makers and others who are passionate about the places in which we live and work.”
