Social housing pledge backed in North East
Affordable housing in the North East is set for a £283 million pound boost from the Government. Last week’s announcement is seen as a step forward for the region with over 90,000 households on housing waiting lists in the North East.
Housing minister Yvette Cooper told the Commons the government will spend an extra £10.2bn on social housing. The announcement included an assurance that 110,000 additional social homes will be built in England over the next three years.
Keith Loraine, group chief executive of Gosforth based social housing provider Isos Group, said: “This is fantastic news for the region and in particular for the many thousands of people on our waiting lists who are in need of quality affordable homes to rent and buy.
“Organisations like Isos Housing Group are well positioned to assist the Government in meeting these ambitious growth targets and have the skills and financial capacity to deliver the homes so desperately needed here in the North East. This gives us a marvellous opportunity to further reinvest in our region to help create thriving local communities.”
Regional Assemblies are now being asked to draw up their own recommendations about how the investment should be spent, with every region, including the North East, expected to deliver significant increases in new social housing.
