Penultimate phase of business park nears completion

The penultimate phase of a business park which could create as many as 3,500 jobs is almost finished. Spectrum 4 and Spectrum 5, part of Spectrum Business Park in Seaham, are due to be completed by developers at the end of this month.

The site was reclaimed and developed with money from the National Coalfields Programme (NCP), run by English Partnerships and One NorthEast. The NCP assists former coalfield communities across England by reclaiming the sites for the creation of employment, new homes, commercial premises and public spaces.

Paul Wellstead, managing director of the Hillford Group, who are developing the site, said: “Spectrum 4 and 5 add further options to the range of office accommodation already available on the site. “The staff facilities and demographics resources of the Seaham area make Spectrum a prime location for office occupiers.”

Spectrum Business Park is already home to the Pensions Service and the new Business Link North East.

District of Easington Council is also supporting the regeneration of Seaham. Councillor Rob Crute, Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “Spectrum Business Park is one of a number of regeneration projects which are changing the face of Seaham for the better. “These include the town centre area (Byron Place Retail Complex and St John’s Square); the North Dock, which is benefiting from £2m of One NorthEast funding to create a marina and business space; Hawthorne Colliery; and the former Vane Tempest Colliery site, now the East Shore Village.

“It really is a fantastic time to be associated with Seaham.”

Work will start on the final phase, Spectrum 7 and Spectrum 8, early next year.
